Recently we had the pleasure of collaborating with the royalty free music company Flying Hands (http://www.flyinghands.com) to bring our customers even more stock music. The Flying Hands copyright free music library debuted in 1996 (when the first stock music CD was released), but the company was started in 1993.

Our own Mike Bielenberg sat down with the founder of Flying Hands, Ray Yates to talk about his royalty free music experience and what inspires him about great stock music:

Bielenberg: "Which market was Flying Hands originally meant to satisfy? What was your motivation for starting the business?"

Yates: "The stock music company was originally started by two writers, Ray Yates and Brian Curella who were looking for a way to build a music business. We quickly discovered that for most productions our competition was not other writers but rather the stock music libraries. After creating a CD for a royalty free music library, I did the math and figured there was a lot more money to be made selling the music ourselves. Within a year, we had four CD's, a telemarketer and I was working three-quarters of my time on the business."

As with many other Copyright free music libraries, Yates felt there was a lot of low-quality royalty free music in them and he saw the need to focus on quality.

Bielenberg: "Which was your favorite Flying Hands CD, from a musical standpoint, and why?"

(Part of the answer to this question is featured in the royalty free music blog.)

Yates: "Our first CD Flying Hands (AV Series Vol 1) will always have a special place in my heart, but Mystic Journey (Special Edition Vol. 6) is my favorite. Written by Michael Ferenci, it is essentially an entire action adventure film score. The music is character-based in that musical themes introduce the villain, hero, comic sidekick, and heroine. The themes reoccur throughout the score in many different context; mystery; suspense; battle; comedy; love; betrayal; grief and finally, triumph."

Bielenberg: "From a music production standpoint, name two of your best memories creating this stock music library."

Yates: "In 1999 I bought out my partner and built new offices and recording studio. The studio and mastering suite were excellent sonically, making it a joy to work in. The string quartet recordings were some of my favorite. I did nearly all of the mastering for the stock music library over the years. Mastering the Mystic Journey CD was a challenge in that I was trying to get the big sound of a Hollywood film rather than an orchestral recording. I think I achieved that."

Bielenberg: "How do you think the Flying Hands CD collection stands out from other royalty free music libraries on the market?"

Yates: "I always use as much live instrumentation as possible, but also use synthesizers when appropriate for the style of music. I think innovative writing, great sound and an eclectic mix of music gives Flying Hands its distinct sound."

It is the distinct sound of the Flying hands royalty free music library that makes it the perfect partner for RoyaltyFreeMusic.com. Check out the many great copyright free music CDs available from Flying Hands, and of course the high-quality library from RoyaltyFreeMusic.com.
