Royalty Free Music > Music News > Industry Uncomfortable with Downloadable Music and Film Service

April 11th, 2006

As always, RoyaltyFreeMusic.com offers companies and individuals inexpensive downloadable music in the form of over 700 tracks of royalty free music that can be used as background music for a variety of projects or simply as a way to enhance a personal music collection. The available music comes in many styles, from classical to rock and pop. Because with royalty free music , you don't have to worry about paying anything to satisfy Copyright Law beyond a low one-time fee, you can be guaranteed enjoyment of the instrumental, original music for a lifetime. Other downloadable music providers, while they offer a seemingly large selection of popular music are not abiding by the law and thus those downloading might suffer severe penalties.

Many music and film industry professionals are losing patience with sites that continue to offer concert footage from top artists, including the Rolling Stones, Franz Ferdinand and U2, among others. Simple keyword searches can lead listeners to a variety of bootleg items with just a few simple clicks. Amateur sites such as YouTube are providing millions of Internet users with thousands of video clips of concerts as well as spoofs of major films. While YouTube has made it possible for amateur filmmakers to share their clips and home movies with other interested parties, the phenomenon is starting to draw the negative attention of music labels, film studios and television professionals. Authorities fear that particularly the downloadable music offered constitutes pirated material.

Many authorities claim much of the downloadable music and some of the background music used in the amateur film clips is intended to get around regulations put into place that have shut down free file sharing sites such as the formerly free Napster and Limewire. While the footage might be crafted by amateurs, the music performances are by professional musicians whose work is copyrighted and protected, thus not eligible to be given away for free to anyone without permission.

Over 20,000 new video clips and downloadable music files are submitted to YouTube each day, and 15 million people play them every 24 hours. Some films, while amateur have attracted a cult following and have spread throughout the Internet. Many authorities, particularly those in Britain are attempting to take legal action against the service providers that refuse to start regulating content of YouTube.

YouTube offers not only amateur footage but a wealth of old commercials shown on television, including a Rice Krispies ad from 1964 that boasts a Rolling Stones jingle. Earlier this month NBC Universal made YouTube remove hundreds of clips from the site of a "Saturday Night Live" show, and CBS did the same thing when a clip of one of its programs was found on the site.

Many filmmakers have used popular, copyright-protected songs as background music for their own footage, while others have put together pieces of popular films to make new stories. Despite the fact that the content is not in its original context in these spoofs and films, using it at all still constitutes a copyright violation, even though proving ownership of creative pieces that have been spliced, dubbed or mixed creates a confusing legal situation.

RoyaltyFreeMusic.com is pleased to provide selections of royalty free music and background music that is affordable for most filmmakers and borrows from rock, classical, jazz and every style in between.
