Using Royalty Free Music in Old TV Shows Released on DVDReleasing an old TV series on DVD often means renegotiating music rights. At www.royaltyfreemusic.com , we're often asked to provide a more affordable alternative to obtaining mechanical rights to EVERY hit song used in EVERY original scene. Replacing rights-managed music with tracks from our comprehensive catalog of royalty free music is an easy and inexpensive way to avoid licensing issues when releasing a TV series from the past on DVD.
Why do I need to replace the original music?
The answer to this question can be found in the contract for the TV series. Legal documents for TV series that were produced more than 10 to 15 years ago often did not address future releases in new formats such as DVDs. Because of this omission, the use of production music in a TV series is restricted to the original television broadcast format only. It is therefore necessary to renegotiate the right to use music when releasing the TV series in any other format. Renegotiating music rights can be a costly and time consuming process. In order to renegotiate music rights, you must contact the copyright holders for each and...Read More | |

What Is Classical Music?
Classical music is a formal genre of music with roots in Europe. Stylistically varied, classical music includes chamber music, operas, and symphonies, among other styles. Written for a small group of instruments that could fit into a small room, chamber music emphasizes the sound of the ensemble, not individual instruments. For this reason, chamber music does not feature solo performances. An opera is a dramatic composition set to music. Operas combine instrumental music with vocal performances and include visual elements such as costumes. A symphony is a large orchestral piece containing three or more distinct musical movements. Mozart, Beethoven, and Haydn are among the most well-known symphonic composers.
Classical music can be categorized into six musical periods, each with its own distinctive style. The Medieval or Gothic period spanned from the 9th to the 14th century. Influenced heavily by the church, Medieval classical music was characterized by a cappella arrangements of religious music in the form of Gregorian chants, organums, and motets. Guillaume De Machaut and Hildegard von Bingen were two of the period’s most influential composers.
Mirroring the rapid changes in arts and sciences during the 15th and 16th century, classical music evolved dramatically during the Renaissance period. Although the church was still a dominant force, the government began to play a role in shaping classical music as secular music was created to entertain royalty. Composers such as Josquin Des Perez, Claudio Monteverdi, and William Byrd began writing music with separate parts for different instruments such as the lute and recorder. Motets and madrigals, musical pieces that combined text with music, were the predominant styles of classical music throughout the Renaissance period.
Famous for its ornamentation, the Baroque period lasted from 1600 until 1750. During this time, composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach, George Frederic Handel, and Johann Pachelbel composed pieces with elaborately layered melodies. Suites, a sequence of dances in the same or similar keys, and concertos, a musical piece written for an orchestra and solo instruments, were the most popular styles of Baroque period classical music.
Shunning the decorated style of the Baroque period, the music of the Classical period was simple, straightforward, and formulaic. From 1750 until 1820, composers like Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Franz Joseph Haydn, and Ludwig van Beethoven produced masterpieces in the form of symphonies, concertos, string quartets, and theme and variations. These compositions regularly featured the sounds of the pianoforte and the harpsichord.
A prelude to the Modern period, the Romantic period of classical music emerged in 1820. For the next 90 years, composers such as Johannes Brahms, Richard Wagner, and Peter Tchaikovsky labored over compositions with lengthy movements that enhanced the drama and emotion of classical music. The addition of modern brass and woodwind instruments to ensembles and orchestras was one of the most notable developments of the Romantic period.
The sound of Modern period classical music can best be described as eclectic. From George Gershwin’s jazz styling to Richard Strauss’s classic operas to Phillip Glass’s minimalist sound, classical music created after 1910 encompasses a wide range of musical styles. Developments in technology during the Modern period made it possible to use computer generated electronic sounds, forever changing the face of classical music.
Some Classical Music Is In The Public Domain. Does This Mean That It Is Also Royalty-Free?
Works fall into the public domain after their copyright term has expired. According to copyright laws, many classical pieces are now considered to be in the public domain. Although this music is copyright free, it is not necessarily royalty free. Suppose an orchestra wants to record its own version of Beethoven’s Brandenberg Concerto No. 1. The orchestra would be free to do so because the concerto is not subject to copyright restrictions. However, the orchestra could copyright its version of the concerto. In this case, the concerto is not copyrighted but the sound recording is copyrighted. If you elected to use this version of Beethoven’s Brandenberg Concerto No. 1 in your project or business, you would be responsible for paying royalties for the copyright. Royaltyfreemusic.com’s catalog of royalty free classical music gives users the flexibility to include quality classical music in their projects without worrying about ongoing fees or copyright restrictions.
How Can I Use Classical Music In My Projects?
One of the most versatile genres of music, classical music has a timeless appeal that makes it appropriate for use in a variety of different projects. Producers often utilize classical music as production music in television programs, newscasts, films, and documentaries. Listen closely the next time you watch your favorite movie or TV show or flip on the 6 o’clock news. Chances are you will hear classical music playing in the background during scenes or used as bumper music to transition to commercial breaks.
